M Trivia 1.5: Answer
September 15, 2009 – 11:04 amThe M Trivia challenge for MM Express 1.5: “What city is known as the Garden City of India?”
The correct answer: Bangalore.
According to Wikipedia:
Bangalore (ˈbæŋɡəloːɾ), also known as Bengaḷūru, is the capital of the Indian state of Karnataka. Located on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore is India’s third most populous city and fifth-most populous urban agglomeration…
Bangalore’s reputation as the Garden City of India began in 1927 with the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the rule of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. Several projects such as the construction of parks, public buildings and hospitals were instituted to beautify the city.
The online edition of The Hindu newspaper reports on the discrepancies over the origin of the city name:
The city’s name has its origin in a tale. King Veera Ballala was lost while on a hunting trip. He came upon the dwelling of a poor woman, who generously shared her simple meal of bende kaalu boiled beans. Bangalore is said to be a mispronunciation of this term.
Botanists however beg to differ, and in this city almost everyone is an amateur botanist - a passion for plants and flowers rules the heart here. They think the tree Benga (Indian Kino) is responsible for the city’s name - Bengaluru still exists in Kodigahalli, not Hebbal.
The crown jewel of Bangalore’s gardens is the Labagh Botanical Gardens, located in the heart of the downtown district. View the home page for a look at the stunning 360 degree photos.
While you take in the beauty and uniqueness of Bangalore and its gardens, pray for the spread of the gospel in this Hindu majority region.

Bangalore is associated with the Bangalore torpedo still used by the military today (my son is a combat engineer and has used these!)
