CNN:

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (CNN) — The death toll from flooding in southern Brazil continued to climb Wednesday, with the Civil Defense reporting more than 100 dead.

About 50 federal police are being dispatched to Santa Catarina state, where most of the deaths and damage have occurred, Agencia Brasil said. The authorities will help look for victims and provide security for local businesses.

An aerial view shows the extent of flooding this week in the southern Brazilian city of Itajai.

About 30 people are missing, Civil Defense officials said.

In addition, more than 54,000 residents have been left homeless, and another 1.5 million have been affected by the heavy rains, the state news agency reported.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced he will release nearly 700 million reais ($350 million) on Wednesday, said the official news agency Agencia Brasil.

    - 97 deads, when cnn news were released there were around 80.
    - Government help is about 1.6 billions of reais
    - It is not the federal police that has been sent to Santa Catarina but a federal force (task force to help, not to control).
