Peters on M Terminology: “Civilization”
November 25, 2008 – 3:57 pmWrapping up the four-part “Peters on M Terminology” series, notice what he offers as a definition of civilization in his A Biblical Theology of Missions:
Civilization
Civilization, [italics his] a secular term which refers to the level of cultural development, is little used today in relation to Christiam ministries. Insofar as it is used, it betrays a remnant from Albrecht Ritschl’s idea of Kultur-Christentum which he practically identified with Western civilzation.
Today it is freely admitted that no truly Christian civilization exists anywhere. The West is dying in secularism - the divorce of culture from God and religion - and the East is drowning in a pantheistic osmosis and religio-socio-cultural symbiosis - the total merging of culture and religion.
