Peters on M Terminology: “Missions”

October 8, 2008 – 4:30 pm

In a previous post, I quoted from George Peters’ work A Biblical Theology of Missions, defining the term “mission.” Notice how he differentiates between that term and “missions”:

Missions is a specialized term. By it I mean the sending forth of authorized persons beyond the borders of the New Testament church and her immediate gospel influence to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ in gospel-destitute areas, to win converts from other faiths or non-faiths to Jesus Christ and to establish functioning, multiplying local congregations who will bear the fruit of Christianity in that community and to that country.

Church leaders and scholars would do well to examine their usage of the terms “mission” and “missions” and implement them accurately. Though this distinction may seem petty, the ramifications of a fuzzy view of a church’s mission and it’s missions ministry are devastating.

  2. Perhaps some specific examples about how the failure to distinguish between missions and mission would be helpful to this point?

Thanks for the vision and effort behind mission mandate! It will be a great resource.
