South Africa to Spend $30 Billion on World Cup Prep

August 28, 2008 – 2:12 pm

Another proof that soccer (known as ‘football’ outside the US) is the world’s sport:  According to allafrica.com, South Africa’s preparation for World Cup ’10 includes $30 Billion (U.S.) worth of upgrades to airports, roads, soccer complexes, and other infrastructure in the 10 cities which will host matches for the global contest. This is the first World Cup to be held on African soil.

The official FIFA website of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

It is amazing to see how sport brings countries together, for the good or the bad. We saw it recently in the Beijing Olympics; the World Cup is just another example of the “global culture” of sports. What an opportunity believers have to use athletics as a relational bridge to communicate the love of Christ through the gospel!
